Information for Candidates

Alberta's Municipal Affairs made several changes to the Local Authority Elections Act and the Municipal Government Act in 2024 that significantly impact candidates including the rules and requirements surrounding campaign funding. The Town of Oyen strongly encourages anyone interested in becoming a candidate or campaigning to review the amended legislation.

NEW Notice of Intent to Run

Due to recent changes to the Local Authorities Election Act, unless a candidate has already submitted their nomination papers, a notice of Intent to Run must be filed with the Town of Oyen prior to accepting or expending campaign funding.

Candidates can file their Intent to Run form with the Legislative Services Manager as follows:

Additionally, the Town of Oyen is required to maintain a register of candidates who have given notice of Intent to Run and make this register publicly available on our website.

Nomination Period

The nomination period for the 2025 Municipal Election opens January 1, 2025 and closes at 12:00 noon on Monday, September 22, 2025. 

During this period, nomination papers can be submitted at the Administration building Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. 

In order for the nomination papers to be accepted, they must:

  • Be complete and in the prescribed forms;
  • Include a minimum of 5 signatures from electors eligible to vote in the 2025 Municipal Election and be a resident within the local jurisdiction (Ward specific) on the date of signing.
